What’s New in Men’s Swimwear?

Monday

It’s only fair to spend some time talking about Men’s Swimwear trends for 2008. The good news for guys is, not much has changed since last year! Board shorts (the longer trunks that are around knee-length) are still going to be the most popular choice.

Don’t let the name fool you—board shorts are not just for surfers. Board shorts look good on just about any male body type, whereas tighter and shorter suits do not.

If you’re a pro swimmer or swim for sport in some fashion, you’re probably more comfortable with the smaller, tighter suits. No, I’m not talking about banana hammocks and itty bitty Speedos. Just more like shorter shorts that are close fitting.

At any rate, it’s kind of the same as women’s suits—if you have the body for it, and the confidence, it’s okay. If you don’t, please try the board short option.

Some other things guys need to think about when preparing to wear a swim suit—hair and footwear. I’m not talking about hair styles. If you’re going in the water, it’s gonna get wet so that’s not too important.

The hair you need to make some choices about is located on your back and chest. Some hair is fine. Looking like a bear is not in style right now so consider a wax.

As for footwear, it’s okay to wear regular tennis shoes to the beach, but remember that the sand can get *really* hot and you may not want to keep putting on tennis shoes every time you’re walking up to the concession stand or bathrooms. Sandals are a perfect choice and they come in plenty of styles—with ankle straps, without ankle straps, in leather, or fabric.

If you can deal with it, take along a trusted friend when you’re shopping for your trunks. A trusted and fashionable friend, that is.

Hot Looks to Get Wet In!

Summer has arrived, as have desires to hit the beach, the pool, or just the backyard. Summer time leads to fantastic feelings of fashion freedom. Shorts, flip flops, short sleeves, etc. The more skin you can expose while remaining within the law, the better!

So it’s time to tackle fabulous swimwear options for 2008. There’s a style for every body type, so don’t worry if you haven’t been kicking up your exercise program these last couple of months. Right now, the only exercise you need is to keep your eyes moving down the page.

Continuing a trend that was just getting off its feet last summer is the growing popularity of one-piece suits. These one-pieces, sometimes known as tank suits, are making a comeback as the new sexy. Remember the days when it was scandalous to have bare ankles in public? Well, I don’t remember either, but I do remember hearing about that somewhere along the line.

Can you imagine being able to make someone breathe heavy just by flashing an ankle? Well, I’m certainly not suggesting you go that far in your cover-up, but why not leave some surprises? A simple return to semi-modesty with a one-piece bathing suit can be the sexiest thing you do all year. And, you know, your dad will be happier, too.

Also a continuing trend is the retro swimsuit look. Think Marilyn Monroe and Jackie-O. These swimsuits can be either one pieces or two pieces but tend to cover more area than modern one-pieces and bikinis. Urban Outfitters has a great retro swimwear collection to check out. Throw on some oversized shades, grab your beach towel and you’re all set for some nifty times at the pool!

Finally, if you’re not at all interested in modesty, or tan lines, bandeau-style bikinis are the way to go. These tops look basically like a 3 or 4 inch band of spandex that goes all the way around your chest. Be careful if you want to go in the water and swim, though—these small tops have a bad habit of coming loose and exposing way too much!

No matter what swimsuit you choose this season, don’t forget to put some time into choosing a cute cover-up, as well. Have fun!
